Kaamakhya is famed throughout India as the birth place of Kaama Deva or Cupid, God of Love.
Kaameshwari Devi - the patron Goddess of the temple is held to be an aspect of Kali. This temple is renowned for bestowing the gifts of bhukti (pleasure) and mukti (liberation/enlightenment). It is considered one of India's greatest & most ancient centres for Tantric learning & experience.

For thousands of years, pandits, tantrics and yogis have visited Kaamakhya to attain perfection (siddhis) in the performance of their saadhana (spiritual practice) and yagyas. One of the essential principles of tantric philosophy is that true knowledge is deeper than what our senses perceive: things are not as they appear to be. From the orthodox perspective, Enlightenment (liberation/mukti) and pleasure (bhukti) are held to be mutually exclusive. However, integration of life is one of the great gifts of Kaamakhya: divine union through the fullness of our humanity.

Out of the 51 Shakthi Peeths (primary temples of Divine Mother), Kaamakhya is one of the greatest, most powerful & most illustrious. For thousands of years, it has been a mecca to those desirous of attaining perfection in their spiritual practice (saadhana) and in their yagyas.

24 January - 1 February 2012 marks the Grand Festival of Maha Saraswathi: that aspect of Divine Mother governing knowledge, intelligence, creativity & profession/career. Saraswati Puja - the Grand Day of Maha Saraswati happens on the 5th day of the festival: 28 Jan 2012. This is the first day of Spring and is held to be the birth day of Kaama Deva.

Navaratri Background
Goddess Durga slaying Mahishaasura the buffalo demon

Navaratri [nava = 9 ratri = night] or 9 nights of mother divine is a time of cleansing and purification and evolution throughout nature. It is a time when the tide of Sattva or coherence or wholeness of life rises to purge the fragmented, imperfect values of natural law. In vedic mythology it is represented as the time when Shakti [the quintessential power of the universe], champion of the gods, is victorious over the demons. It is a time for light to triumph over darkness.


Harnessing nature's momentum through yagya 
Navaratri is also known as 'Durga Puja': 9 day festival celebrating Durga: the Divine Mother -the wholeness or collectedness of God's feminine aspect. Yagyas are traditionally performed during the 9 days to harness the momentum of this highly auspicious window of opportunity. The green light was given to J's new show (after saraswathi yagya) - discussions about giving it the go-ahead had earlier stalled with indications that it would not be commissioned. Production is now underway and all is going smoothly.

Thought you might like to know that J's new show (which we had the (saraswathi) yagya done for in July) has consistently been number one for the last couple of months. Everyone agrees it is punching about its weight. Very cool.

Things are now much calmer. But it certainly has been a rocky few months.
We did sell the house ... now after all that has happened in the world - the stock market collapse etc - I feel that we were very fortunate, the financial context is much clearer now.
All is well.

On the days of the yagyas, I devoted myself to saadhana (spiritual practice)- actually I tried to "do" saadhana but could "do" nothing except lie in the saadhana room in a semi-swoon, feeling like I was being "done". The energy was so powerful I was totally unable to function, so I surrendered to it. I suppose this is normal.
